I have always been a creative person...
I remember my great-aunt teaching me to knit when I was about 6, although I didn't really figure it out until I was done high school. My grandma tried to teach me embroidery and cross stitch, but I think I was too young to really understand. I took sewing lessons and learned the basics.
While my middle sister was drawn to paint and pens and could sit for hours with those mediums, I was always someone who wanted to explore, to try new things and test my limits. I was drawn to the outdoors, to hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, bushcraft, really anything that allowed me to play outside.
I had been taught crocheting in Jr. High, and that was something that I kept doing and teaching, making so many toques, bags, mitts...really anything that I could design on the fly. Then I started into knitting and that opened up a whole new realm of fibre art. I loved how I could take some string and sticks and turn it into something practical and useful.
Sewing turned into making outdoor gear and clothing for myself.
From there I learned simple bookbinding and started creating journals and notebooks for all occasions. And trying my hand again at embroidery.
Four years ago I had the opportunity to try tatting.
I remembered watching my grandma and great-aunts shuttle tatting and thinking it looked so difficult but so intricate, so when I heard there was a needle method, I knew that was something I could easily understand. I had inherited a lot of threads, shuttles, and tatted pieces from one of my Grandma's when she passed, so I had everything I needed except the needles.
Ever since then I have been creating and selling jewelry with tatted elements and trying to incorporate my love of nature into what I create.
Now I am turning my attention to helping others learn new craft skills that maybe they haven't tried before, but making sure my love of the outdoors is reflected in everything that I offer as well.
I'm excited for this next creative adventure and I hope you'll join me!
